The Race for Victory has become a staple classic on the racing calendar for over 25 years. This one day race has been set up as a charity race, fundraising for the Frances Vorwerg School. Frances Vorwerg is a school located in the South of Johannesburg set up around learners who have special educational needs, particularly those with physical disabilities and Cerebral Palsy.
Taking place on the 28th of August this year, our elite riders undertook 110km of racing for a cause. This event saw quite a big turnout of elite teams including Team Honeycomb, Cyclepower, TEG, Aluwani, Luso pro cycling team and Albion Wheelers.
Team DMS, being down one rider due to rider Dirk Nel participating in the UCI gravel series in Europe, were confident going into the race. The race was flat and fast with multiple attacks happening immediately after the 6KM neutral zone had ended. The team did well in covering all the moves. Kimhan Van Der Merwe and Jaco Van Dyk were chosen as the protected riders for this race with the job of waiting for the right move or taking it to the finish line in a bunch sprint.
Eventually a promising break went with the big names being represented, Kimhan Van Der Merwe, Jaco Van Dyk and David Maree all managed to find themselves among the big players within the break. The tactic now became to keep rolling through and open up the gap to ensure the break become the winning group.
With 10Km to go, the cat and mouse game began. Jaco Van Dyk threw in the gutter tactic while the other 2 DMS riders sat in to take the sprint at the finish line. A few small errors from the Team DMS riders meant first place was not to be, but the remainder podium spots of second and third were filled with purple as rider David Maree took second with Kimhan Van Der Merwe taking third.
